Formerly known as the island "Yakobi," which translates "seems to be so" from Russian, it was renamed in 1805 by Captain U. F. Lisianski of the Imperial Russian Navy to its present-day name, after the Russian explorer Admiral Vasili Yakov Chichagov who explored the region in 1765-66. The name "Yakobi" was transferred to the neighboring island.

The district is readily accessible by boat or airplane. The oldest rocks of the vicinity consist of a thick sequence of strata that is thought to be in part of Upper Triassic and in part of Lower Cretaceous age.
